Clooney takes jabs on AMC
BY JOHN KIESEWETTER | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER (The Enquirer )
OK, so not all of his movies are classics. But some are - and he's a class guy - so American Movie Classics is toasting and roasting him with a tribute Wednesday, and a "Movies 101" interview today. Clooney, 45, a 1979 Augusta High School graduate, is the 21st person to be honored by American Cinematheque, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public presentation of motion pictures. Previous winners include Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Nicole Kidman.
Here are some of the best comments from the "George Clooney: An American Cinematheque Tribute" at 8 p.m. Wednesday:
- "He's brought hope to actors, because every time a career is not going well, they say, 'Don't give up. Look at George Clooney.' " - Salma Hayek.
- "Paul Newman (once said), 'To be an actor, you have to be a child.' Let it be said that no actor on the face of the earth is more childish, more juvenile, more downright infantile than the man whom, some of you, for some unfathomable reason, honor tonight." - Don Cheadle.
- "They say you're not the best-looking guy, and that your talents have limited you to writing, directing and producing, and you only have one Oscar - but don't get discouraged." - Renée Zellweger.
- "Last year the award went to Bob Saget. God bless you, and keep up the good work." - David Letterman.
- "He taught us how to drink.... He taught us how to get free Nike stuff." - Juliana Margulies.
- "He taught us how to read our lines off hospital bed sheets." - Noah Wyle.
- "All of this from your genius work in 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes' early in your career." - Bonnie Hunt.
- "It's a roast. Nobody told me that! I was going to be nice. ... Thanks for beating the hell out of me. I love it." - Clooney.
Tribute: "George Clooney: An American Cinematheque Tribute," 8 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, American Movie Classics (Repeats 3 a.m. Thursday; noon next Sunday.)
Interview: "Movies 101 with Professor Richard Brown," 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. today, AMC
